The SEPTA public transit system is an excellent option for those staying in or near the main ASA conference, or those staying elsewhere in Philadelphia. The events at Drexel location are scheduled in three buildings that are on Market Street between 32nd and 33rd Streets.
The nearest subway stop is at 34th Street and Market, which is on the Market-Frankford Line (MFL). The nearest stop with full accessibility is at 30th Street and Market, also on the Market-Frankford Line. Conference participants coming from the main conference hotels can board the Market-Frankford Line at 11th ST and Market, 13th ST and Market, or at City Hall. From City Hall, it’s just one stop to 30th ST station (for full accessibility) or two stops to 34th ST station.
Conference participants staying elsewhere should check with their hotel to see what the nearest subway station. If you are staying near the Broad Street Line, you can take that to City Hall and transfer to the Market-Frankford Line.
Folks staying in outer areas of Philadelphia or surrounding suburbs may want to travel to Drexel via SEPTA’s regional rail service to 30th ST station, just three blocks from the conference events.
Taxis and Car Services
Taxis, Uber, and Lyft are all common in Philadelphia. For local taxis, the apps Curb and 215-Get-A-Cab are excellent ways to request a car and can also be used to pay for a taxi whether or not it was requested through the app. If you have any problems with a taxi, you may report those problems to the Public Utility Commission.
Please see the American Sociological Association’s Travel and Housing page for recommendations about booking housing in Philadelphia.
Participants looking to book more affordable accommodation, or to share a large dorm-style space, may want to contact Apple Hostels, which is located near the 2nd ST stop on the Market-Frankford Line, about 15 minutes from the conference by subway.
The preconference organizers are pleased to have secured 20 double rooms at The Study, a hotel across the street from the preconference, for August 8-11. The rate is $169/night. To secure this rate, use the following registration link by August 1: http://bookings.ihotelier.com/bookings.jsp?groupID=2291177&hotelID=99716. You can also call the hotel directly at 215-387-1400.
Preconference attendees may want to share housing while in Philadelphia. People have already begun posting share requests to conferenceshare.co for the preconference and annual ASA meeting. Choose ASA 2018 from the dropdown menu, and you’ll find a number of listings that include the person’s name, gender, dates they’ll be in town, and additional notes.
The Preconference organizers ask that all participants refrain from wearing perfume, cologne and other fragrances, and use unscented personal care products in order to promote a fragrance-free environment for the benefit of attendees with multiple chemical sensitivities.
